Observations & qualities of the beach
- the wind dominates all our senses
- shooting star patterns from the wind which reflects on pools and puddles on the beach
- humming electricity pylons
- We threw a stick into the water and watched the patterns of movent and rotation which it gets from the water
- we thought about using the quality of the wind in different ways, for instance, in building wings for ourselves
- the trees on the beach are leaning because of the wind
- the eb and flow of the sunlight which gets covered and uncovered by the clouds. clouds that could be considered waves of the air that is liquid.
- sound isn’t consistent due to the wind
- wind blows from the right side to the left side of the beach. walking within the wind is good.
- foot traces in the upper part of the shore stay very long, guessing even days or weeks
- other traces of human presence stay even longer (thrash, plastic, bottles)
- life/nature tries to inhabit this artificial nature, erasing the line between artificial and non artificial
- there doesn't seem to be a solid line between life and death
- boats and yachts in the wind make for a great stochastic composition
- wind
-Wind is overpowering. If it is behind you it forces you to run. If it is in front of you it forces you to stop. I have experienced this before in Den Haag but not to this extent.
-I found proximity of the trains to the beach quite strange. I feel like I like and do not like it at the same time. There is a strange balance on the beach between human and nature, it is in the sand, the sounds
-I found a dog leash and a burst ball on the beach and I decided to walk the ball like a dog as the only people using the beach seems to be dog-walkers. I realised this 'dog' could act as a guide for the wind direction and I could recreate this experience of being pushed and pulled by the wind. Although I would be 'walking my dog' it would in fact be the wind walking me. I am interested in where the wind would take me if I let it.
- A dominance of the wind over all the elements on the beach, trees, sand, water, bushes, people, animals, especially birds and ducks.
- A contrasting mix of sounds, those created by the wind against elements, and those created by human infrastructure such as trains, cars, planes.
- The wave-like patterns created on the waterfronts of the beach are like a footprint left by the movements of the waves which are strongly affected by the directionality and strength of the wind, these prints are a past impression of the weather conditions, and could have the potential to tell a story.
- Tree trunks swerve from side to side (even the bigger trunks that you wouldnt expect), by touching or hugging these, one enters a continuous connection to how trees experience the forces of the wind.
- There are sounds created by the frictions between the branches of trees neighbouring each other, as well as occasional rubbing noises between branches that have started to rub into each other more perpendicularly. These sounds allow us to enter in a meditative state, they can act as a relaxing yet dramatic focus on the wind's force. Finding a location where these sounds can be emphasised (where there is less wind passing by at ground level) helps achieve this focus.
- the overwhelming wind forced me to make movements and decisions according to its patterns
- i began to collect glass bottles that were discarded along the beach and listen to their resonances when angled against the wind
- when combined in groups of 4-7, the bottles' pitches began to interfere with each other, leading to a strange dissociative experience while holding them
- the process of finding / reusing discarded objects makes me attached to the trash i find

- standing on the shore seems vulnerable, exposed to all nature elements. wind pressure is like a force field, pushing you in different directions, uncontrollably. water and sand blows to your face.
- shipyard nearby produces captivating sounds. the yacht mast has threads that clink to against the mast. wind rushing through the mast creates a whistle. different length & thickness masts produce different pitches.
- at first i thought patterns of shoreline are being constantly reiterated by wind but it changes.
- patterns of waves are disrupted by objects in the water
- under the trees, more towards the land, the sand dries occasionally because of some branches and emerging tree roots piling up different weighted sand. this creates color differences between dry and wet sand.
Foam, distorted by the power of the wind and the sand was spread around, creating weird patterns in the sand.
Listening to how the envelope of the ocean unfolds inside of a long green tube is hard to believe that it’s not a synthesised sound. The low howl of constant energy in the tube, while the recognisable rises and falls of the frequencies and waves of the ocean pass through.
Light scattering of the sun behind the clouds fascinated me. Constant change of circling light; lines spinning.
Closer to the boathouse and by the harbour is an orchestra of cruise ships. They hit and they howl, creating a beautiful combination of sounds. There are multiple flutes fading in and out, in each their rhythm and pitch, while the percussionists step vibraphones, marimbas and steel drums in complex rhythms. And the bass flute player occasionally joins in, filling up the space with its thick, physical sound.
Here the wind is like a strong power, an energy source that you can use to load yourself with. The water and the waves are unpredictable and splash over me.

- The wind, mostly a constant, interacts with static objects in relatively predictable sequences. These interactions would iterate and morph as the wind changes, but a certain foundation could be observed at its core. This foundation stemming from the logic and patterns inherent to both the natural forces and human-engineered-objects which are forced to interact. While these interactions are not the purpose of either entity, they do collide to create something strangely musical.
